Transforming society by creating world-class leaders.

Who we are...

In 1998, Samuel Kirubi, a student at Egerton University studying Economics and Statistics, applied for internship at Equity Bank. At that time, the bank was already thinking about how they could develop future talent. The bank took him in as the first student beneficiary of Equity Bank’s leadership programme. Between 2001 and 2002, the bank started to identify students who were top in their districts in the national examinations and offered them pre-university internships. Twelve students were enrolled in 2001 and 20 in the subsequent year. The programme continued to grow with the bank's expansion.

The programme's model was refined in 2009. In addition to internship, mentorship and leadership components were incorporated into the programme. Today, the programme has grown from its initial single scholar to a class of over 600 scholars in 2015 interning at Equity Group in Kenya and it's subsidiaries in East Africa as well as government and partner organizations. The College Counseling programme, too, has expanded from its initial cohort of 6 scholars going to international universities in 2010 to over 60 admissions in 2015. Over this time, the internship model has also developed into a fully-fledged leadership development programme covering four thematic areas of scholar growth: Professional Development, Community Engagement, Global Exposure and Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

What we do

Professional Development

Professional and personal development are at the core of ELP. Our Internship Program provides our scholars with an opportunity to work at Equity Group, partner organizations and government where they are exposed to industry standards and best practices in their respective fields of specialization. Annually, the program provides over 1,100 internships to outstanding scholars as well as leadership congresses to train our scholars on leadership, improve employability and network with peers and successful leaders.

Community Engagement

Our scholars engage in residential mentorship to high school students in three Centers of Excellence in Kenya: Kwale Girls, Nyawara Girls and Nyagatugu Boys, a program which has seen remarkable improvement in the schools' performance. The scholars also provide mentorship and academic coaching to over 9,000 Wings To Fly beneficiaries in their respective former high schools. Through university chapters, scholars run initiatives that impact and benefit the immediate communities through charity and volunteering.

Global Exposure

We encourage our scholars to expand their horizons and become world class-leaders who can compete and succeed in a global marketplace. Through our College Counseling program ELP has facilitated 265 admissions to some of the world’s leading universities, including the Ivy League universities in the USA, and access to full scholarships. The Global Summer Internship Program (GSIP) provides a platform that enables these scholars to come back to Africa and share their experiences by interning at Equity Group, goverment and other partners as they also mentor others applying to join their universities.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Through the Innovators Program, ELP trains and develops scholars in innovation and entrepreneurship skills by introducing them to Business Plan writing, Book Keeping and Idea Pitching. The programs runs a challenge annually which sees the best business pitches and innovative ideas get seed funding as well as mentorship from successful entrepreneurs. So far, the Equity Innovators Awards has funded top scholar business and innovations to the tune of Ksh. 1,700,000

What our scholars say!

I am extremely grateful to ELP for their tireless efforts to mentor and equip me with leadership skills which have positively impacted my life. From a wimpy and unconfident young girl to a strong, charismatic personality have I been transformed. Thank you.

University of Pretoria - South Africa

ELP is full of holistic and life changing programs. It has enriched my leadership skills and give-back to the society, moulding the visionary, charismatic and transformative global leader in me. This has greatly influenced me in various leadership positions, both at medical school and in my community.

University of Nairobi - Kenya

It's indescribable! Over the years I have realized that I am not in the Equity Leaders Program but I'm the Program. It's an experience that empowers and gives me an identity I'm proud of. ELP has made me soar to heights I had never dreamed of. I would be incomplete without the program!
